From Ancient Greek ὀρθός (orthós, “straight”) + πτερά (pterá, “wings”), plural of πτερόν (pterón, “wing”).

- A taxonomic order within the superorder Polyneoptera – various insects including crickets, grasshoppers, wetas, katydids, etc. It formerly included many other groups such as cockroaches, stick insects, mantids and earwigs, which are now classified in other orders
