Oud-Vossemeer
Dutch edit
Etymology edit
First attested as vosmer in 1410. Derived from oud (“old”) and a compound of Middle Dutch vorsch (“fresh, potable, dammed-in”) and meer (“pool, watercourse”). The element vorsch was quickly reinterpreted as vos (“fox, Vulpes vulpes”). The element oud was added to distinguish the settlement from Nieuw-Vossemeer.
