First attested as epangne [read: epenregae] in 1275. Borrowed from West Frisian Parregea, of unknown etymology. Proposed derivations from a personal name or a compound of a demonym derived from Old Frisian up (“up, upper”) and ein (“end”) and gâ (“village, village area”)
