New Latin, from Ancient Greek ποικιλία (poikilía, “being marked with various colours, striped, spotted”), or ποικιλίας (poikilías, “a kind of fish”), both ultimately from ποικίλος (poikílos, “many-coloured, spotted, pied, dappled”).
