Etymology edit

From michin (“fish”) +‎ tlahuātzalli (“something dried”), with the loss of the substantival element tla- (“thing”), as the element michin is a noun. Attested indirectly through a diminutive form in the compound Caxtīllān michhuātzaltepitōn (“dried sardine, herring”).
