From Proto-Indo-European *tus-sḱ-yós (empty), from *tews- (to be empty). Cognate with Proto-Indo-Iranian *tušćyás (whence Vedic Sanskrit तुच्छ्य (tucchyá), Persian تهی (tohi)).
