Etymology edit
Formally reflects Proto-Indo-European *werH-, possibly back-formed or reanalyzed from *h₂wer-. From the later descend Sanskrit अपिवृणोति (apivṛṇoti, “to close, cover”), Latin aperiō (“to open, to uncover”) < *ap-wer-, operiō (“to close”) < *op-wer-, Oscan veru (“door”, pl.), Ancient Greek ἀείρω (aeírō, “to lift, raise”).

- Slavic: Root-aorist with fixed accent in the preterite + simple thematic present with mobile accent.
