Reconstruction notes edit
The *sāwol written in EDPC[2] may be a mistake for *sāwūl; there is no known mechanism to shorten the second vowel of the Proto-Indo-European *séh₂wōl it uses as the direct etymon (see also the r-stem nouns).
Klimp, preferring *séh₂wl̥ as the direct etymon, reconstructs *sāwal.[3]
