From Proto-Indo-European *(s)tenh₂- (“to thunder”). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *þunraz (“thunder”), Latin tonō (“to thunder”), Persian (tondar, “thunder”), and Sanskrit स्तनति (stánati, “to resound; to thunder; to roar”).
