From Proto-Indo-European *(s)tenh₂- (to thunder). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *þunraz (thunder), Latin tonō (to thunder), Persian تندر (tondar, thunder), and Sanskrit स्तनति (stánati, to resound; to thunder; to roar).
