Proto-Finnic edit

Etymology edit

Unknown. Possibly with Northern Sami vuodna or from *onci (cavity). In older Finnish, the meaning "one's share in life" is attested, bridging the semantic difference part-way. Alternatively the word may be of Germanic or older Indo-European origin (akin to Proto-Germanic *wunjō, Proto-Indo-European *wénh₁-ih₂). This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
