From Pre-Germanic *ǵʰreh₁tús, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰreh₁-, *ǵʰer- (“to desire, enjoy”). Related to Latin horior (“to encourage”), Ancient Greek χαίρω (khaírō, “to rejoice”), Sanskrit हर्यति (haryati, “to like, enjoy”).
