From Proto-Indo-European *ǵnibʰ-néh₂-ti, an iterative verb from Proto-Indo-European *ǵneybʰ- (“to pinch”) which also gave rise to the strong verb *knīpaną. Compare Lithuanian gnýbti, žnýbti (“to pinch”).[1]
