Uncertain. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewp- (“tuft, cluster, hair on the head”), related to Gothic 𐍃𐌺𐌿𐍆𐍄 (skuft, “hair of the head”), German Schopf (“tuft”), Albanian çup (“without tail, maimed”).
