From Proto-Indo-European *pléw-e-ti, from the root *plew- (“to fly, flow, run”).

Reconstruction notes edit

In Sanskrit, there exists प्रवते (pravate, “to jump, spring”) which Cheung ties to a separate set of Iranian cognates under Proto-Indo-Iranian *práwati. That verb is traditionally assigned to Proto-Indo-European *prew-, but Cheung considers the existence of that PIE root dubious given the scanty reflexes. Mayrhofer, on the other hand, considers प्रवते (pravate) and प्लवते (plávate) to be from the same source, given the r ~ l alternation in Sanskrit.[1]

If Proto-Indo-Iranian *práwati is indeed different from this term, then there has still been a merger in the Iranian descendants in form (to Proto-Iranian *fráwati) and probably influence between the two in Indo-Aryan.
