From earlier *karabja, borrowed from Ancient Greek καράβιον (karábion) or κάραβος (kárabos, boat, crab, beetle) (Modern Greek καράβι (karávi, ship, boat)). Could have been influenced by or confused with *korbъ (basket).

According to ESSJa, from adjective *korb-jo-, from *korbъ.
