Etymology edit

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *erélis, *arélis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃érō.

Cognate with Lithuanian erẽlis (eagle), arẽlis (dialectal), Latvian ērglis (eagle) and Old Prussian arelie (eagle). The Proto-Slavic form comes from a Proto-Balto-Slavic *arélis (cf. Lithuanian arẽlis (eagle) (dialectal), Old Prussian arelie (eagle)) from the earlier and original *erélis.
