Iterative stem of *polti (to set on fire) +‎ *-iti (whence dialectal Slovene pláti). Related to Lithuanian pelenaĩ (ashes), plė́nis (speck, fine ashes), Latvian plẽne (white ashes on coals), Old Prussian pelanne (ashes).
