From Proto-Balto-Slavic *plēwāˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *plēw-eh₂. Cognate with Latvian plêve, Lithuanian plėvė̃ (membrane), Ancient Greek ἐπίπλοον (epíploon, net around the intestines).
