Etymology edit

Ultimately from an extension of Proto-Indo-European *pel- (“to cover, stretch”):

Kurkina, Varbot: From Proto-Indo-European *pleḱ- (“to plait, to weave”), effectively a variant of Proto-Slavic *plotъ (“lattice, hedge”) with enlonged root vowel.
Potebnja, Matzenauer: From Proto-Indo-European *pleh₂- (“to flatten”) + *-tъ or from ō-grade of *pleth₂- (“to expand”). Akin via *-trom suffix to Proto-Celtic *ɸlātrom (“arrangement; garment”), possibly Proto-Germanic *leþrą (“leather”) (of Celtic origin). Further related to Lithuanian platùs (“wide”), Latvian plats (“wide”), Ancient Greek πλατύς (platús, “wide, broad”).

In either case, related to *poltьno (“linen, cloth”).
