Either a compound of *staur (destruction, disturbance) +‎ *-jan,[1] or inherited from Proto-Germanic *staurijaną, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *(s)towrH-éye-ti, from *(s)tewrH-, *(s)twerH- (to stir up, agitate).
