Etymology edit
Uncertain. Possibly derived from Proto-Germanic *tullaz (“that which is counted, reckoning”), from Proto-Indo-European *dol- (“calculation”). Alternatively a borrowing from Latin telōnēum (“toll booth, custom house”).
