(This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.) From Ancient Greek ῥιπίς (rhíps, “mat”, “wickerwork”, “plaited work of osiers or rushes”, “fan for raising the fire”, “fan used by ladies”) + κεφαλή (kephalḗ, “head”)

Also from Ancient Greek Βοός (boós): genitive singular of βοῦς (boûs): cow + φίλος (phílos): that which is loved or important: beloved, dear, of or from a friend, (less commonly): loving, friendly.

Rhipicephalus m

A taxonomic genus within the family Ixodidae – hard ticks.

Boophilus was once considered a separate genus, but studies in the early 2000s resulted in Boophilus being made a subgenus of Rhipicephalus.
