Etymology edit

From New Latin Rhynchops (from the Greek ῥύγχος and ὤψ, meaning beak-face) + nigra (black), named by Linnaeus.

Proper noun edit

Rhynchops nigra f

  1. (archaic) A taxonomic species within the family Rynchopidae – black skimmer, now known as Rynchops niger.
  2. (proscribed) sometimes mistakenly applied to the Indian skimmer, now known as Rhynchops albicollis.
