Borrowed from Spanish zapote, from a Nahuan language, from Proto-Nahuan *ȼapotl.

- (obsolete) A polyphyletic genus of fruit-bearing tropical and semi-tropical trees, the type species of which, sapodilla, is now called Manilkara zapota; some, but by no means all, of the other species at now assigned to other genera in family Sapotaceae.
