Two main origins:
- Borrowed from Persian شاه (“shah, king”), a Persian surname which is widespread in Iran and in the subcontinent.
- Borrowed from Gujarati સાહ (sāh, “merchant”), an occupational surname from Sanskrit साधु (sādhu, “merchant; jeweller; money-lender”).
