Etymology edit
Potentially attested as sigerdachurke in the 13th century, attested with certainty as syerdeberth in 1385. Compound of Old Frisian Syerd (“a personal name”) and bert (“settlement”). The second element was gradually replaced by the plural form of buur (“house, cottage”).
