The village is named with Scottish Gaelic srath (“river valley”) + eachan (“foal”). The surname could either derive from the placename or from an Anglicized form of Irish Ó Sruitheáin (“descendant of Sruitheán”), a personal name from sruith (“sage elder”) + -án (“diminutive suffix”).
