Etymology edit
Attested as Stroodorp in 1838-1857. Compound of stro (“straw”) and dorp (“village, settlement”). The hamlet formed around a set of straw huts built as temporary accommodation for labourers working on the Gent-Terneuzen Channel. Compare Stroobos, Stroodorp, Strooiendorp and Strooienstad.
