What does "Traditionally related to δρακεῖν 'to see'[1] with the literal meaning of 'one who stares', although semantic connection unlikely" mean? Does that mean the relationship is simply folk etymology, with no basis in fact? 71.66.97.228 05:56, 13 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Good question; that's an unsubstantiated assertion, the personal opinion of an unidentified Wiktionary editor. No, it's not a folk etymology, but a real etymology proposed by scholars. The connection is the well-known fact that snakes (with whom dragons were regularly compared in history) appear to stare at their prey. --Florian Blaschke (talk) 19:18, 23 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
This etymology is also accepted by Beekes, by the way. --Florian Blaschke (talk) 22:44, 6 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
