Talk:горілка

Latest comment: 10 years ago by -sche

I recall a bunch of transliterations being removed from some other entry (update: канадієць, Talk:канадієць), sometime in the past two years, in response to a RFC. The argument made then was that it makes no sense to manually list transliterations in certain entries but not others — it can only lead to inconsistency as some entries have transliterations and others don't, some entries' transliterations are wrong and others aren't, etc. It's better to have only one appendix of different transliteration schemes. Unless you have a good counter-argument, I'd like to undo this edit... - -sche (discuss) 18:28, 16 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Entering transliterations was discussed in Wiktionary:Beer_parlour/2008/August#Romanization_example, and seemed to have support.
I don’t really understand your argument. Just about everything in Wiktionary is manually entered, and missing or incorrect in some proportion of entries. How would it follow that we should leave out transliterations but still including etymologies, definitions, etc.? Michael Z. 2013-11-16 23:36 z
Etymologies and definitions differ from word to word, but transliteration schemas are the sort of thing that one appendix can cover: once you know how to transliterate Cyrillic according to, say, GOST 1986, you can transliterate any word according to GOST 1986. Whereas, once you know the definition of канадієць ... you still don't know the definition of горілка until you look that word up.
I wasn't aware of the previous BP discussion. I've started a new BP discussion to see if opinions have changed in the past five years. - -sche (discuss) 01:52, 17 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
But if you you see, e.g., kanadiyets in an English text, Google won’t lead you to канадієць in Wiktionary because we have a transliteration table somewhere. The romanized form of the Ukrainian word has to exist on that page.
A new discussion is cool. Lua changes the picture. Michael Z. 2013-11-17 02:37 z
Hm. Googling kanadiyets actually returns that entry as the top hit. Those clever bastards. Michael Z. 2013-11-17 02:39 z
Return to "горілка" page.
