The Russian language usage edit

In Russian, this letter has no sound of its own, but modifies that of the preceding consonant, causing it to be pronounced hard (i.e., unpalatalized). This description is not quite accurate for the modern usage, will need to rewrite at some stage. That was the original usage of the "hard sign", in modern Russian, it's used as Ukrainian/Belarusian ' - add a /j/ sound between the consonant and the following iotised vowel (e.g. подъём) after prefixes, the "soft sign" (ь) is used for the same purpose if it's in the middle of a stem. No longer used at the end of a word.--Anatoli 03:59, 8 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
