Ceremony

Isn't this the "sacred thread ceremony" of Thai and Lao culture? I've never heard of the food. 24.29.228.33 17:15, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

I only know it as an offering of cooked rice under a conical arrangement of folded leaves and flowers. Sometimes it may be topped with a boiled egg, but sometimes it is the conical arrangement of leaves and flowers only, and no rice. Apparently บายศรี is a borrowing from Sanskrit, where it means "sacred thread". ศรี must be from (deprecated template usage) श्री (śrī), but I’m not sure where บาย is from ... possibly from (deprecated template usage) उपवीतम् (upavītam), but I think there are other words that mean thread. So perhaps the rice offering is just a part of the ceremony, but it is unclear how it fits together. —Stephen 00:25, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
