Etymology

Is it safe to assume that this word comes from 庭+鳥? Niwa-tori=garden bird? I'm not sure where one looks up Japanese etymologies.

Yes. Detailed information can usually be found in the entry for the kanji (鶏 in this case) and it confirms your guess. I don't know where to look them up either but they often are simple compounds. Ultimateria 02:23, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

• @Ulmanor, your etymology is correct, but as Ultimateria hints at, etyms and other detailed entry information only goes on the lemma page. For most Japanese entries, that will be the kanji spelling, which should be pointed to from kana and romaji pages by use of the {{ja-def}} template at the start of each definition entry line.
