To me it seems unlikely that something with 乳 in it wouldn't mean a provider of milk. I would like to see some citations, and I wouldn't trust a dictionary. Fugyoo 23:11, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

It's quite hard to find metaphorical uses of this word, but here's some:

  • 胡经之,《文艺美学论》,华中师范大学出版社,2000:
    板桥自幼丧母,从小就由乳母抚养长大。乳母费氏为同村贫妇,小时就给板桥祖母当侍仆,为人慈祥忠厚。
  • 王振羽,《诗人帝王: 权力意志者的性情与意境》,济南出版社,2003:
    12岁的时候,体弱多病的母亲也去世了,据说拓跋浚从小由自己的乳母抚养。拓跋浚非常尊重自己的乳母,他掌握大权之后给自己的乳母很高的地位。
