I don't know where to write it, but it's interesting for Appendix:Proto-Semitic/śamš-:

In Old Akkadian texts šamšu/šamaš ist several times written with sa, si... instead of ša/ši... This ist probably spoken as "ś" or "s". Look at "šmš" in I.J. Gelb: MAD3, pdf page 300, and von Soden, Akkadisches Handwörterbuch Vol.3, p.1158 "šamšum(m), OAkk. śamśu(m)". Maybe, because cuneiform ist not explicit, there existed both śamśum, šamśum and šamšum in Old Akkadian. Greetings, --Edfyr (talk) 10:44, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

We should list all of the variant spellings, with the most common one used as the default spelling. Other can be listed in ===Alternative forms=== section and within their own entries redirected using {{alternative form of}} template.
