3B edit

RfD this sense:

A grade of pencil with lead that makes darker marks than a pencil grade 2B but lighter marks than a pencil of grade 4B

We should have B, H, and HB for pencil grades (which we do), but I am not sure about having every possible numbered form. (How many are there?) 3cm (three centimetres) is definitely a useless sum of parts; A4 (paper size) seems too valuable to delete. Where does this one stand? Equinox 23:11, 20 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
We have quite a few kinds of systematic terms similar to this one. See {{Paper-A}} and {{Paper-B}}, for example. I perpetrated {{Book-B}} and many of the individual entries in that matrix. Many "unabridged" dictionaries have these items in appendices, perhaps to save space. I doubt that all of the individual terms in these systems would meet RfV, but it seems silly to include some and not all. I see no principled reason to delete them, but attestation could determine which are worthy of being entries and which belong only in a template or appendix. According to w:Pencil#Grading and classification, there are at least 20 grades, from 9B to F to 9H. F is the zero position of the scale, with B numbers being degrees of blackness relative to it, and H numbers being degrees of hardness (blackness and hardness being inversely proportionate). B, F, and H are obviously keepers, but I'm not sure about the numbers. If they're not kept, a simple usage note for B and for H could cover the same ground. If a term like this is used without an obvious clue as to whether it is a pencil grade, a paper size, or map coordinates, then we can't really make do without an entry for each constructed term, like 3B. DCDuring TALK 05:12, 21 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
If it were truly without context, a dictionary definition wouldn't be much help. There is, however, generally context to show that it refers to pencils. Otherwise, we might get stuck having to create defs for map grids. Chuck Entz (talk) 05:48, 21 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Keep. There's only abut 20 of them, and we're not a paper dictionary so space is not a problem. Not obvious, and indeed meaningless, from it sum of parts. --Dmol (talk) 09:04, 21 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Keep I think. Could be considered a word rather than 3 and B written without anything in between. Mglovesfun (talk) 09:43, 21 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Seriously, keep some podunk pencil grade, but delete television show? That's crazy talk!Purplebackpack89 (Notes Taken) (Locker) 19:45, 22 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
