I thought the etymology was ant- + Arctic, meaning "opposite the Arctic"? In any case, "Arctic" comes from "arktos", meaning "bear" (because polar bears are found there), rather than anything to do with circles. — Paul G July 1, 2005 12:16 (UTC)

In future edits... can folks please use {{AGr.}} for etymology that references Ancient Greek? {{Gr.}} is actually for Modern Greek (surprisingly, the list of words that *should* have this in their etyms is not an empty list, though it is small). Thanks! ArielGlenn 15:40, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
