Talk:Brazil

Latest comment: 16 years ago by Stephen G. Brown

See http://www.aboutbrasilia.com/facts/brazilia.html about the correct spelling for Brasil vs. Brazil and Brasília vs. Brazilia. Note that in "1945, when Brazil (sic) and Portugal met and agreed on the first Orthographic Vocabulary of Portuguese Language; such vocabulary defined the form "Brasil"."

That was defined for the Portuguese language, not for English. In English, it’s Brazil. Foreign languages are welcome to spell their names any way they like, but their linguistic authorities, such as the Real Academia, hold no sway with English. And as for Portuguese, even with the past orthographic agreements between Portugal and Brazil, there continue to be significant spelling differences between the two dialects of Portuguese. —Stephen 16:16, 17 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
