From Middle High German engel, from Old High German engil, Gothic aggilus* from Ancient Greek ἄγγελος (ángelos), Latin angelus.
Gothic aggilus, bible translation by Ulfilas about 350 AD. *Greek spelling aggelos, pronounced angelos, Latin angelus.

the Greek written spelling clearly shows ἄ γγ ελος (a gg elos), Gothic spelling also 2 gg (aggilus), the gg is pronounced as ng, page 40 (71.197.119.17 04:46, 14 April 2013 (UTC))
- I'm quite aware of that, as were the people that decided on the transliteration/romanization scheme used here. There are tradeoffs in any way of doing this, so it's not perfect- but it's the way it was decided to do it on Wiktionary. Chuck Entz (talk) 05:11, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
