Etymology edit
Does anyone know the etymology of this name? The obvious guess is that it's from a Romance language, meaning "land of the black people", but I don't have any evidence to support this ATM. --196.33.212.251 06:56, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

The "Native name" Ni + Ger for the river is a nonsense argument that has been thoroughly deconstructed. It most likely does in fact come from the word "Black", just like how "Sudan" means "Land of the blacks". There are 200 native languages, the closest they can think of is some imaginary Berber word. I say citation needed unless you feel this is somehow "common knowledege". To say its a misconception is just dishonest.
