Vast in quantity or number? Profuse? Abundant? Taking place on a large scale? Although the full context isn't given, none seem to be a natural fit to the usage in this quotation.
Besides which, while there's certainly merit in having quotations from days of yore, it could be worthwhile to add a recent quotation too.
