Following Muntigl and Turnbull (1998), counterclaim refers to those instances in which Speakers “propose an alternative claim that does not directly contradict nor challenge the heares' claim” (p. 231) but which allows further negotiation of H’s original proposition, such as the statement The samples are on their way via bike messenger as a response to the proposition that the samples cannot be discussed during the meeting.
