Alternative spelling? edit
Does a mere typographical variation like the use of the long s count as an alternative spelling? If so, not just distinguish, but every word with one or more non-final s-es has at least one. Splibubay 10:27, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

Why? Etymonline explains it as influence of Old French -iss-, perhaps someone could add it to the etymology in a coherent form. – Jberkel 13:20, 2 March 2021 (UTC)
