Is the etymology correct? Fromkin et al, in "Introduction to Language", state that this was originally English slang (which has since entered into the conventional lexicon)

Both are correct. Originally, meaning when it first came into use in English, it was slang; but it came to English from a dialect of German. —Stephen 16:52, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
