gimble is apparently another way of spelling gimbal. One nautical term glossary has both terms, but the definitions don't seem very distinct. It could be that you are right, at least in nautical usage. But see also Gimbal on Wikipedia.Wikipedia . Except for the glossary above, not much at “gimble”, in OneLook Dictionary Search.
