This site based on Littré cites another reference work, the Encyclopédie Universelle, which has the word attested since 1532 in the form houmar.
The earliest attestation I've found so far is:
- 1612, Marc Lescarbot, Les muses de la Nouvelle-France, page 33:
- Et en vn méme temps la petite Sardine,
- La Crappe, et le Houmar, suit la côte marine
- Pour vn sembable effect;
