Is definition 2 really "chiefly British"? I certainly know that as a standard American meaning of "howler".

I have no special objection to a split if appropriate, such as for etymological reasons, but fail to see the intention. There is only one etymology as far as I can see, and that is the derivation of and from "howl". Please explain if I have misunderstood.

I could understand a split along the lines of the use of various derivations as being literal, literally having to do with howling noises, and as an intensifier as in "howling swell" and might even assist if such a split is demanded, but I think a bit of rationale and justification would be in order first, because as I see it, the inclusion of all those entries as they stand add to the perspective and do not interfere with the looking-up process.
