Is this a regional thing? I've always lived in the northeastern US my whole life and I'm more familiar with the phrase 'jack of all trades' being used neutrally or positive; the only time it is negative is if it is actually followed by 'master of none'. By itself though, I don't think it has any good or bad connotations; it's merely descriptive.Mcdictiopedia (talk) 19:05, 14 September 2013 (UTC)
- From NY myself. As with many long expressions, "jack of all trades, but master of none" can be invoked by just using the leading part of it. As jack is not a word understood in this sense except in this and other fixed expressions (eg, "every man jack"), "jack of all trades" must be assumed to be an invocation of the whole expression and thus somewhat pejorative.
