In my grandmother's 1907 diary, in Paris she writes:

"I found some wonderful knitted knee caps and bed slippers that look like enormous socks."

In those days I'm guessing there must have been slip-on knitted coverings to keep the knees warm. Reminds me of fingerless gloves!
