verb: transitive To allow to descend.

They let down the rope and I fastened it to the basket.

Unlike the other senses, at let down, this is let#Verb + down#Adverb in a physical, literal sense. DCDuring TALK 18:31, 25 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Delete; keep the usage example under the "literal" placeholder sense at the top. Equinox 18:45, 25 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Keep. The most common English meaning should go before others. --Anatoli (обсудить/вклад) 05:00, 3 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
The "most common English meaning" is purely SoP, and is therefore covered by the first sense - "see let, down". bd2412 T 01:25, 5 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
A lot of well-known dictionaries disagree, including Merriam-Webster and define the word let down as "to allow to descend gradually " or "to allow someone or something to move to a lower position". It's a common English verb, even if its meaning can be guessed from its constituents, especially by fluent English speakers. --Anatoli (обсудить/вклад) 01:49, 5 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
